AMS-IX NEWS
AMS-IX
17 April 2026
On the evening of April 15th, we reached a new milestone on our Amsterdam platform: a traffic peak of 15 Tbit per second. It’s a moment that reflects something bigger than just a number. As the world continues to digitalise, the volume of internet traffic keeps growing alongside it. Every day, more people rely on the internet to work, study, stream and connect, often all at once, especially during the evening hours when usage naturally peaks. That’s exactly what we saw around 21:00 CEST, when the internet traffic exchanged through our platform reached this new high.
This milestone is part of a broader trend we’ve been seeing for some time. More networks are joining our platform, while existing participants continue to scale up their capacity.
One of the clearest signals of this shift is in port usage. While 100G ports have remained relatively stable, the number of 400G ports has grown by 65% over the past year. At the same time, the total volume of traffic exchanged on our platform increased by 4%.
Together, these changes point to a steady evolution towards higher-capacity, more data-intensive connectivity, driven by everything from streaming and cloud services to AI and real-time applications.
For us, this peak is not just about infrastructure. It’s about the role the internet plays in everyday life, and the ecosystem that makes it all possible. We couldn’t have reached this new peak without our customers and can't thank them enough for their trust.
“Internet traffic continues to surge globally as digital services, AI-driven applications, and real-time data exchange become ever more embedded in daily life. This new traffic peak confirms AMS-IX’s position as one of the world’s leading Internet Exchanges, continuing to play a pivotal role in enabling resilient, high-capacity global connectivity. It’s an important milestone, not only for our platform, but for the broader internet ecosystem and the continued strength of the Dutch digital society in 2026.”
