Over 2025, AMS-IX continued to see steady growth on its Amsterdam platform, driven by rising global demand for Internet connectivity and digital services. In the past year, we handled 35.66 Exabytes(EB)*of traffic, marking a 4% year‑on‑year increase. The year closed as the highest-traffic month, with 3.21 exabytes, pointing to steady growth as the world’s dependence on digital services and applications continues to intensify. We reached a total of 902 connected parties including big content delivery networks, telecom providers and ISPs.
Internet volume and traffic peaks
Over the past decade, Internet traffic volume over the AMS-IX platform in Amsterdam has quadrupled from 9 EB in 2015 to 35.66 EB in 2025. We expect this global growth to continue as consumers and businesses increasingly adopt digital and AI- driven solutions in their everyday life.
We started 2025 with a new traffic peak of 14.2 Tb/s, the equivalent of 7.5 million people watching TikTok videos simultaneously, or 63 million people playing Fortnite at once.
Ecosystem expansion
The AMS-IX ecosystem continued to expand in 2025, reaching 902 connected networks on the Amsterdam platform. This includes global players such as Meta, Netflix, Microsoft, and TikTok, alongside major Dutch Telecom Providers like Odido, ISPs and hundreds of regional, and local networks.
Bright Networks Club
A key contributor to this expansion was the launch of the Bright Networks Club in 2025. Designed for small and developing networks, the initiative lowers barriers to connect to the platform by offering free 1GE connections, technical support, hands-on training days and community events. By enabling these new networks to connect and exchange traffic at no cost, We help participants develop operational experience while strengthening the diversity and resilience of the overall ecosystem.
Capacity increase
At the same time, larger networks continued to scale their presence on the platform. We recorded a 65% annual increase in 400G ports, replacing lower-capacity connections and allowing significantly more traffic to be carried with fewer ports overall. As a result, total active port capacity reached 69.57 Tb/s, representing a 9% year-on-year increase. This shift reflects growing demand for high-capacity connectivity, fuelled by expanding AI workloads and the continued growth of live-streaming services.
Shifting focus to emerging markets
Over the years we expanded our presence globally and currently operate 15 Interconnection platforms in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Latin America, connecting nearly 1300 networks, in a bid to further strengthen the global Internet.
As part of our ongoing commitment to building a stronger and more sustainable Internet, we regularly review our international operations to ensure it is delivering the greatest possible impact. Following a comprehensive assessment of our market presence, we have decided to discontinue our operations in the United States. The Bay Area and Chicago platforms are scheduled to close in March 2026. This decision will enable us to focus our resources and expertise on regions where we can more effectively support local connectivity, foster ecosystem development, and create long-term value for the Internet community.
