Over the last couple of weeks, AMS-IX experienced a significant surge in traffic exchanged on the platform. Even a new peak traffic record of 8 Terabit per second (Tbps) was set in the midst of the outbreak, only four months after we reached the 7 Tbps peak in December. As a consequence, a significant number of customers and members increased their port capacity.

The number of networks upgrading on the AMS-IX platform in Amsterdam increased with 46 in Q1 of 2020. Compared with the same quarter last year, this number doubled. The number of networks upgrading was 23 in Q1 of 2019. Moreover, most of these networks upgraded in March (January there were 11, February there were 13 and March there were 22). The uptake in internet traffic due to the COVID-19 measures definitely was an important factor for networks to upgrade their capacity.

The amount of capacity upgraded on the AMS-IX platform was also much higher in Q1 of 2020 than in other quarters. The total capacity upgraded in Q1 2020 was 1,36 Tbps, 18% higher than the capacity amount upgraded in Q1 2019 and 18% higher than the capacity amount upgrades in Q4 2019. Again, this was largely due to the upgrades from the last month of the first quarter.

Peter van Burgel (CEO of AMS-IX) says:

“Millions of people are quarantined and increasingly dependent on internet services, which makes it of utmost importance that networks have enough capacity for growth. We are aware of our critical role in this regard and have taken all measures necessary to support our customers and members”
