Medior Engineer

Job purpose

The AMS-IX Medior Engineer realises implementation of upgrades and changes in the network. The focus of the Medior Engineer is to perform installation, testing and administration of network equipment and infrastructure within the AMS-IX platform, including different types of routers, switches, servers, as well as to connect the required cabling (Fiber, UTP, etc.).

Key responsibilities

  • Manage network equipment and infrastructure: the Medior Engineer performs installation, testing and administration of network equipment and infrastructure within the AMS-IX platform, maintains lab infrastructure and manages the capacity of the infrastructure.
  • Manage data centre providers: the Medior Engineer manages the supply and stock of all the used equipment for data centre providers where AMS-IX has PoP locations and stays in close contact in order to perform installation activities.
  • Support Network Operations Centre (NOC): the Medior Engineer supports the Network Operations Centre (NOC) in case of problems with the physical installations, as well as performs testing of network equipment and infrastructure and executes preventive and planned maintenances focused on hardware requirements.

Qualification and competencies

  • MBO degree or equivalent in mechanical / electrical field of study
  • Good knowledge of English (written and spoken); Knowledge of Dutch is a plus
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar position within a Telecom/ISP or data centre environment
  • Data centre-related and ISP/OSP experience
  • Experience with racking and cabling of equipment
  • Hands-on experience with copper/fiber cabling technologies
  • Experience with electrical power infrastructure/grid
  • Experience with DCI/DWDM equipment
  • Experience with and ability to compose detailed technical documentation
  • Insight in the structure and relations that make up a network

Medior Network Engineer

Overall job purpose

The Medior Network Engineer is part of a team of Engineers who work closely together on the day-to-day operations of the switching platform, designing and implementing solutions of new services, platform extensions and upgrades. One of the major focus areas of this role is providing 24/7 support to AMS-IX customers worldwide.

Key responsibilities

  • Configure and maintain the AMS-IX switching platform and supporting environment, which is not a static configuration due to continuous growth.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the respective IX platforms around the world.
  • Translate the development of products into performance improvement of the services.
  • Design and implement opportunities to extend existing and/or deploy new platforms.
  • Maintain insight in all technical aspects of AMS-IX products & services, including engineering, software development and security management.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • 5+ years in a similar role
  • Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Information Technology or related fields
  • Master of Science degree (MSc) is a plus
  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken)
  • Knowledge of Dutch is a plus
  • Driving license (and willingness to drive)
  • Sound IT background, specialising in the area of networking
  • Experience with management of MPLS/VPLS, Ethernet, and IP networks, and understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects, as well as protocols that are required to build and maintain these networks
  • Experience with configuring BGP and a good understanding of routing protocols
  • Experience with creating automation scripts, preferably using Bash and Python
  • Good insight in the structure and relations that make up the internet
  • Knowledge of Linux/Unix environment
  • Experience in composing detailed, technical documentation
  • Understanding of the concept of a route server and Bird configuration experience is a big plus
  • Knowledgeable of VxLAN/eVPN is a big plus
  • Scripting experience in Perl is a big plus
  • Experience with automation tools like Ansible/Salt is a big plus
