System Engineer with programming skills
About AMS-IX
AMS-IX is one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world, interconnecting over 470 ISPs, Carriers, content providers and other Internet related businesses. AMS-IX builds its services around a state of the art MPLS/VPLS network, switching at peak times over 1.5 Tbit/s. In order to support the large number of high bandwidth ports at which customers connect, AMS-IX always uses the latest developments in hardware and gives leading input to manufacturers for the development of next generation equipment. The AMS-IX office, located in the heart of Amsterdam, is currently manned by an international staff of about 35 people in various functions. The function under consideration is part of the System Administration team which falls under under the technical department and reports to the CTO. The current team consists of 1.5 FTE.
About the position
To support both the administrative environment and management of the switching platform, AMS-IX employs a growing number of Linux and UNIX based servers. Together with other members of the technical team the system engineers take responsibility for the implementation and maintenance of this server park and are able to plan and think proactively. Because of the high visibility of the AMS-IX there will be a strong focus on security of these systems. Although configuration of the systems will be according to guidelines of the AMS-IX security officer,input from the system engineers (based on their knowledge and experience) on these guidelines will be expected.
Next to the basic system management, the system engineers are expected to be able to script and program to automate and support management tasks and provide IT support to end-users in the organization.
Requirements
We are looking for someone with:
- Experience with configuring and setting up Puppet (configuration automation).
- At least three years of experience with one or more of the following:
- Linux and/or UNIX server management
- Hardware (installation, maintenance)
- Software (installation, maintenance)
- Security (host-based firewalls, OS fortification, VPN)
- User management (LDAP)
- Typical Open Source server applications (Postfix, Postgres, Samba, Amanda, Apache,etc.)
- Experience with (Linux KVM) virtualization
- Perl scripting skills (monitoring, task automation)
- Strong skills in both spoken and written English.
- Ability to think independently and proactively and share ideas within a team.
- Good documentation and communication skills.

AMS-IX builds its services around a state of the art Metro Ethernet network based on MPLS/VPLS, switching around 1.5 Tb/s at peak times. In order to support the large number of high bandwidth ports to which customers connect, AMS-IX works with the latest developments in switch/router hardware and gives leading input to manufacturers for the development of next generation (for example 100GE) equipment.
Next to the exchange platform in Amsterdam, AMS-IX also operates a small Exchange on Curacao.
ABOUT YOUR DEPARTMENT
AMS-IX is currently operated by a team of 36 people of which roughly half is technical staff. Of these, 6 people form the NOC, which is responsible for the day to day operations of the platform.
The AMS-IX NOC is located at the AMS-IX offices in the centre of Amsterdam. Besides office space there is an extensive lab facility at this location to help with developments, testing and debugging.
ABOUT THE POSITION
As an AMS-IX NOC engineer you will be part of a team of engineers who work closely together on the day to day operations of the Ethernet switching platform, designing and implementing solutions for new services, platform extensions and upgrades. After the initial trial period you will participate in the 24/7 NOC service. Currently the AMS-IX NOC offers full operational support during Amsterdam office hours and standby support for emergencies only outside these hours. With the expansion of services to other timezones and the increasing amount of customers from all over the world on AMS-IX Amsterdam we are expanding the service hours of the NOC to full 24 hours.
ABOUT YOU
- You have a sound IT background in both education and experience, specifically in the area of networking.
- You have experience with the management of MPLS, Ethernet and IP networks and understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects and protocols that are required to build and mainttain these networks. Knowledge of VPLS is a plus.
- You have a good understanding of routing protocols and have practical experience with configuring BGP.
- You have a good insight in the structure and relations that make up the internet.
- You know your way around in a Linux/Unix enviroment, can work with shell scripts and have some understanding of Perl.
- You are open minded, eager to learn, able to work in a small team of highly skilled professionals and stress-resistant. Above this you are willing to participate in the call duty system.
- You have good communications skills, your English is fluent (both spoken and written). Speaking and/or understanding at least basic Dutch is a plus. You are willing and able to give subject matter presentations to various audiences.
- You have a driver's licence for a car.

Als PR en Communicatie medewerker bij AMS-IX ben je verantwoordelijk voor:

- Het volgen van relevante publicaties met betrekking tot AMS-IX in de pers (via social media, media tools etc).
- Onze resultaten en nieuwswaardigheden profileren in de media.
- Actief zoeken naar PR mogelijkheden, artikelen, persberichten, presentaties in relevante (vak)bladen of rond evenementen.
- (Mede) ontwikkelen, onderhouden en actualisatie van (nieuwe) website's.
- Ontwikkelen en onderhouden van presentatiemateriaal ten behoeve van evenementen en spreekmomenten directie en medewerkers.
- Regelen en begeleiden van interviews en fotosessies met pers en bedrijfsrelaties.
- Het leveren van een bijdgrage aan de positionering van de organisatie passend bij de kernwaarden van de organisatie.
- Het bewaken en verder ontwikkelen van de huisstijl.
- Produceren van scripts/tekst voor filmmateriaal, businesscases en how to's, begeleiden van filmmakers/opnames.
- Beheer fotografisch materiaal.
- Hands on ondersteuning tijdens evenementen.
Jouw profiel:
- Een opleiding op het gebied van PR/communicatie of (bedrijfs)journalistiek.
- Minimaal tweetalig (Nederlans/Engels) met Nederlands als moedertaal en uitstekende beheersing van het Engels.
- Vlotte pen en aantoonbare ervaring in tekstproductie.
- Relevante werk- of stage-ervaring.
- Zeer nauwkeurig kunnen werken.
- Affiniteit met IT en Internet.
- Ervaring met online communicatie tools: Social Media, CMS, e-marketing.
- Ervaring met het MSoffice en/of iWorks.
- Ervaring met DTP is een pre.
- Proactief en in staat om zelfstandig te werken. Zelfstandig op zoek kunnen gaan naar benodigde informatie voor het schrijven van teksten.
- Inventieve netwerker die in staat is om pakkende persberichten op te stellen en om derden als ontwerpers, drukkers of filmmakers aan te sturen.
