Press Release
The index of the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of Europe's largest independent exchange places for internet traffic, has achieved a record height of 25 Gigabit per second. The amount of traffic, which is exchanged via the platform by the members of the AMS-IX association, has doubled within the relatively short period of 8 months, with a peak in the past four months.
On the AMS-IX platform, the members have the possibility to exchange internet traffic, the so-called 'peering'. All large Dutch and a great number of foreign Internet Service Providers (ISP's) are connected to this platform, each connected with their own port(s) to the AMS-IX infrastructure. The internet traffic has grown strongly for years and the last few months, it has experienced a tempestuous growth, causing a daily data exchange of millions of Gigabits (approximately 175 Tbyte per day).
The fast growth of the exchange traffic is mainly caused by the increase of the number of xDSL connections in Europe and the continuously speed-upgrading of the user connections. Furthermore, the number of internet applications which prefer a lot of bandwidth - like videostreaming - are strongly increasing.
"Until this far, we have always seen the amount of exchange traffic redoubling each year", according to Job Witteman, CEO of the Amsterdam Internet Exchange. "The tempestuously growth that we are experiencing these days, forecasts a considerable acceleration in the nearby future. Moreover, we are expecting that the growth will especially increase because of the fact that we add some extra services to our platform, like aggregated Gigabit ports and 10 Gigabit p/s ports, which simplifies the possibilities for fast(er) exchanges of lots of data traffic".
