AMS-IX links get bigger!

On Monday morning, May 27th 2002, AMS-IX upgraded the existing link between two of its sites, SARA and NIKHEF, from 4 to 10 Gigabit/s.

The new link has been implemented using Foundry Networks 10 Gigabit LR (Long Reach) interfaces in the BigIron 15000 switches at these locations. A 380 meter single mode fiber connects the two interfaces at both locations.

A second similar link is a hot standby in case problems occur on the operational link. The spanning tree protocol will make this link available in case the primary link fails. This is a temporary solution since the preferred solutions for this is to have both links in a trunk sharing the load under normal operations and a very fast cutover of all the traffic to the other link in case one fails.

The current load on the link is in the order of 2.5 to 3 gigabit/s.
