AMS-IX cabling policy

Dear AMS-IX customers,

First of all I wish you all the best for 2001 !

I would like to bring our new cabling policy to your attention. Hopefully the new policy brings more clarity as to who to contact in case of change of connection, move of equipment, etc.

In the old situation:

At the SARA and NIKHEF locations the :
a.. UTP cabling, used to connect the AMS-IX customer to the AMS-IX switch, is owned by AMS-IX and the
b.. Fibre cabling, used to connect the AMS-IX customer to the AMS-IX switch, is owned by the AMS-IX customer
At the new AMS-IX locations at TeleCity (Kuiperbergweg) and Global Switch (Johan Huizingalaan) all cabling is owned and managed by the colo.

AMS-IX has decided to harmonise the different cabling policies at the various co-locations.

This is accomplished by 'donating' the existing AMS-IX owned UTP cabling to SARA and to NIKHEF. We will ask those AMS-IX customers who own Fibre between their equipment and the AMS-IX switch to do the same thing.

In the new situation:
The service demarcation point of AMS-IX is clearly defined at the AMS-IX switch/patchpannel and the colo is responsible for the wiring between the AMS-IX switch and the AMS-IX-customer.

This change in policy does not affect ownership of cabling used for other purposes than mentioned above (like private peering) and will take effect immediately.

I am convinced that everyone is happy with this new situation.
Best regards,
