NOC engineer

Introduction:

AMS-IX is one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world, interconnecting over 290 ISPs, carriers, content providers and other Internet related businesses. AMS-IX builds its services around a state of the art Metro Ethernet network, switching at peak times at almost 400 Gbit/s. In order to support the large number of high bandwidth ports at which customers connect, AMS-IX always uses the latest developments in hardware and gives leading input to switch manufacturers for the development of next generation equipment. AMS-IX is currently operated by a staff of 25 people. The AMS-IX NOC (currently 8 people) is responsible for the day to day operations of the switch platform. To be able to cope with the increasing work load we are now looking for one more NOC engineer.

Function:

As an AMS-IX NOC engineer you are part of a team of 8 people who work closely together in the day to day operations of the Ethernet switching platform, defining solutions for new services, necessary platform extensions and or upgrades.

The AMS-IX NOC is located at the AMS-IX offices in the heart of Amsterdam. There is an extensive lab facility at this location to help with developments, testing and debugging.

After the initial trial period, the new NOC engineer will be required to participate in the standby service. This means that about every week you will be on call for one whole day and/or weekend.

Requirements

We are looking for someone with the following characteristics:

  1. Sound IT background in both education and/or experience specifically in the area of networking
  2. Experience with the management of Ethernet and IP networks. Understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects and protocols important to build and maintain these networks.
  3. Practical experience with understanding of and configuration of the BGP protocol
  4. Good insight in the structure and relations that make up the Internet
  5. Open minded, eager to learn
  6. Can work in small team of highly skilled professionals
  7. Stress resistant
  8. Willing to participate in the on call duty system
  9. Fluent in english spoken and written, basic Dutch is a pre
  10. Willing and able to give subject matter presentations to various audiences.
  11. Good communication skills. There is a lot of interaction with the other departments in the organization.
  12. Driver license for a car.
