Glossary of Commonly Used Terms

802.1q
IEEE 802.1q (Q-tagging) adds a “tag” field to Ethernet frames to indicate in which VLAN they are supposed to go. This allows an Ethernet port to participate in multiple VLANs. On AMS-IX, the Q-tag mechanism can be used to participate in ISP unicast, multicast and (some) Closed User Groups, using one port.
802.3ad
Also known as “trunking” (Foundry), “EtherChannel” (Cisco), “link aggregation”, or the official IEEE term “LACP / 802.3ad”. Bundles multiple parallel links between a pair of devices into a single high-performance channel.
See also the GE link aggregation page in the Technical section.
ACP
Administrative Contact Person.
ASN
Autonomous System Number. This is issued by RIPE NCC within Europe.
(BGP) Peer
Connected party that is willing to exchange IP traffic with you through the exchange of (BGP) routing information.
CCP
Contractual Contact Person. This is the person that has the authority to sign the AMS-IX Connection Agreement.
EtherChannel
See 802.3ad.
Link Aggregation (GE)
See 802.3ad.
NOC
Network Operations Centre.
Q-tagging
See 802.1q.
Quarantine VLAN (Q-VLAN)
Port-based VLAN used to “quarantine” and troubleshoot AMS-IX member ports. A Q-VLAN consists of one AMS-IX member port and one monitor port. Newly provisioned ports are always put in quarantine to see if they adhere to the Allowed Traffic rules. Misbehaving or erratic ports may be put in quarantine as well.
See also the Quarantine VLAN document in the Technical section of this site.
RIPE
Reseau IP Europeene. This is the organisation which issues IP addresses within Europe. See also the RIPE web site.
SIDN
Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland. See also the SIDN web site.
TCP
Technical Contact Person.
Trunking
See 802.3ad.
VLAN
Virtual Local Area Network. Virtual LANs allow a single physical LAN to be partitioned into several smaller logical LANs. VLANs limit the broadcast domain and thus improve stability and performance. AMS-IX operates several VLANs.
VLAN tagging
See 802.1q.
