AMS-IX presents glowing results over 2009
~ Peering point achieves revenue of 10 million euro for the first time in its history ~
Amsterdam, August 3 2010 – Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of the largest Internet exchanges worldwide, has announced 21 per cent growth in net revenue in 2009, along with a turnover of 10 million Euros, for the first time in the history of the Exchange. As in 2008, the Exchange welcomed almost 50 new members in 2009.
Last year AMS-IX developed a number of activities to expand its services towards clients. The Internet exchange implemented a new MPLS/VPLS infrastructure. Having this flexible and stable platform means the development of the Exchange, and the growth of the Internet traffic, will be guaranteed for the next five years. In addition to a growing number of members and ports, the new platform also offers the opportunity to increase service levels and develop new services and applications.
Moving forward, the infrastructural agenda contains plans for implementing 10 high-density (8*10GE) Gigabit Ethernet blades for the Brocade MLX switches and expansion to new locations.
The new MPLS/VPLS platform also pushed the development of the AMS-IX partner programme with the implementation of a reseller port service. It enables members, customers, third parties and even other exchanges to resell AMS-IX capacity and expand their product and service portfolio with one of the largest, professional and neutral exchanges. A lot of parties worldwide showed their interest, including parties from North America, the Middle East and Asia. AMS-IX expects the new reseller port service will increase sales, trough the partner programme, by at least 50 percent.
Supporting ‘For the good of the internet’ initiatives, AMS-IX also has a more global focus. AMS-IX exported its success formula – being a neutral network, independent and a non-profit organisation – to the Caribbean by opening the CAR-IX. This new IP exchange and peering platform makes the region’s exchange of IP traffic less expensive.
The annual volume shipped between AMS-IX members is an impressive 1,750 ExaByte. Previously AMS-IX expected to break the 1 Terabit per second traffic rate barrier in 2009, but as Internet growth slows worldwide, a new timeframe has been set for summer, 2010. Currently the Exchange reaches peaks of 940 Gpbs. Based on the available ports, AMS-IX predicts a growth of 650 to 750 ports in 2010, predominantly realised by 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
“The new infrastructure does not only enable us to continue growth, but also to identify several streams of an individual network and consider them as a single connection. It inspired us to offer partners the opportunity to resell AMS-IX ports through their own network”, says Job Witteman, CEO, AMS-IX. “By broadening our horizon this way, AMS-IX becomes a more interesting partner for peering communities. It offers members and partners the opportunity to gain financial profit via the Exchange. We are not only increasing the value of the exchange and its members, but also the value for all participants.”
