AMS-IX Value

AMS-IX is a non-profit, neutral and independent association, meaning that it has no bias as to who connects (provided they meet the membership criteria) and its operational decisions are not directly influenced by any financial gains. By making use of the AMS-IX, connected parties improve performance and redundancy while saving on bandwidth usage.

Being an Internet Exchange since 1994 has provided AMS-IX with a wealth of industry related knowledge and an unparalleled reputation within the Internet world.

With currently over 290 Internet related companies connected to AMS-IX, it makes peering possibilities within the Netherlands and Europe extremely attractive. The Current Aggregated Traffic Volume of all AMS-IX connections amounts to over 1.5 PetaBytes a month (February 2007) yielding a monthly average maximum load of 250+ Gbps!

AMS-IX provides the following benefits to its members:

  • Reduction of upstream connectivity costs
One of the major costs involved in any internet related business today is that of upstream connectivity. Our infrastructure allows you to interconnect and exchange IP traffic (peer) directly with other AMS-IX members. This reduces the need to send your traffic through a bandwidth upstream provider.

  • Exchange of IP traffic at a national and international level
With the bulk of Dutch ISPs and many other major international ISPs being members of AMS-IX, a connection allows for easy and relatively cheap connectivity to these ISPs through BGP peerings.

  • Distributed Exchange
AMS-IX is a distributed exchange present at five independent co-locations in Amsterdam. Each location is equipped with an Ethernet Switch. This allows our members to establish a connection to the AMS-IX infrastructure from the co-location site of their choice.

  • Interconnected technical infrastructure
The four AMS-IX switches are interconnected by high bandwidth, 10 Gigabit Ethernet over dark fiber, creating a resilient and robust exchange. Furthermore resilient power supply is available at all of the co-locations.

  • Constant development
The AMS-IX team is professionally involved to extend and improve services for its members. Inline with recent developments AMS-IX introduced services like IPv6, multicast, closed user groups and Private Interconnections. We constantly strive to enlarge the number of potential peers and the potential peering benefits for our members by extending our services.
